SUNNY CLIFFS 11x14

I have really gravitated towards rocky cliffs lately-not like climbing them or wanting to stand atop one but I think I am more drawn to their ruggedness-all the contrast in shadows and unpredictable shapes. Plus the color palette, especially in my neck of the woods where the rocks have rich browns and golds and reds covered in vibrant moss. I have subconsciously been taking photos of rock faces for years now so it felt right to give one a go on a smaller wood canvas.

So, I did this painting and was feeling pretty good about it-I liked the texture of the rocks and the composition of the trees on both sides. I liked the color palette and raw birch "sky" but I did feel like it needed a little bit more. I was digging thru my drawer of paint colors when I came across my iridescent golds and bronzes and coppers that I had never used before. I thought "hey the colors work and it could be kind of rad to layer it in, why not give it a try?" So glad I did! It's always hard to translate a painting into a digital copy so I did my best effort to make a video to show how dynamic this piece is and how rad the iridescent paints turned out, especially on a contrast painting on wood.

Here's some more angles of the same piece. If you look at the first two photos, you can obviously tell that even changing the lighting slightly greatly changed the images and thus the viewing experience.

And on that subject matter of looking at art, a friend and fellow creator mentioned the science of viewing art in person vs. online and how the vibrations of original works evoke different emotions than a copy or print -even when the imitation is almost indecipherable from the original. Makes me think about AI and the future of people using it to curate instant art pieces that will then be digitally printed or mechanically made vs the hand forged works.

Anywho, that seems like it's own infinite conversation but one I have been having with many artists.
